The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did
at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life. -Muhammad Ali

The classical story of the Trojan War has yet to reach the screen, probably because the ten year conflict on the battlefield, featuring mortals, demigods, and immortals would be difficult to condense into the confined border of a theater screen. There have been several attempts to transfer this epic to film, most recently starring Brad Pitt as the great Greek warrior Achilles. Thetis [Julie Christie], mother of Achilles, bathed her newborn son in the River Styx, waters the Immortals swear by. His only vulnerable point was his heel, where she held him when she dipped him into the river.

The legend of the Trojan War includes a prologue about what occurs before the birth of Achilles and Paris [Orlando Bloom]. There was a prophesy delivered by the Oracle at Delphi so King Priam of Troy [Peter O'Toole] would know the implications of the birth of Paris.

A background story involves a golden apple, the "Apple of Eris" with the words 'for the fairest' written on it. Eris threw her infamous apple at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis [parents of Achilles], which caused Hera, Athena and Aphrodite to contend against each other for the prize.

Zeus, the Lord of Heaven, who sent the three goddesses to Mount Ida in order to be judged by the shepherd Paris, had in mind the destruction of mankind. For the ruler of heaven, they say, purposed to make his daughter Helen famous, along with the race of the demigods, by letting her cause a war between Europe and Asia. Paris decided in favour of Aphrodite who told him she would give him the most beautiful woman on earth. The Judgement of Paris led directly to the Abduction of Helen.

King Arthur and His Knights of The Round Table

Legend: King Arthur - No other hero of the Dark Ages is featured so prominently in such a vast amount of literature as King Arthur.

Modern folk-lore, like mediæval legend, has its stories of the inter-marriages of natives of this world with those of the other-world, often located underneath a lake. The curious reader will find several examples of such stories in Principal Rhŷs’s collection of Welsh and Manx folk-lore... The name of Arthur’s wife, Gwenhwyfar, which means ‘the White Spectre,’ also suggests that originally she too played a part in a story of the same kind. In all these and similar narratives, it is important to note the way in which the Celtic conceptions of the other-world, in Britain and in Ireland, have been coloured by the geographical aspects of these two countries, by their seas, their islands, their caves, their mounds, their lakes, and their mountains. The local other-worlds of these lands bear, as we might have expected, the clear impress of their origin... One Irish story has a naïve description of the glories of the Celtic Elysium in the words—‘Admirable was that land: there are three trees there always bearing fruit, one pig always alive, and another ready cooked.'

Such conceptions, as we see from Celtic legend, proved an admirable stimulus and provided excellent material for the development of Celtic narrative, and the weird and romantic effect was further heightened by the general belief in the possibilities of magic and metamorphosis. Moreover, the association with innumerable place-names of legends of this type gave the beautiful scenery of Celtic lands an added charm, which has attached their inhabitants to them with a subtle and unconquerable attachment scarcely intelligible to the more prosaic inhabitants of prosaic lands. To the poetic Celt the love of country tends to become almost a religion. The Celtic mind cannot remain indifferent to lands and seas whose very beauty compels the eyes of man to gaze upon them to their very horizon, and the lines of observation thus drawn to the horizon are for the Celt continual temptations to the thought of an infinity beyond. The preoccupation of the Celtic mind with the deities of his scenery, his springs, his rivers, his seas, his forests, his mountains, his lakes, was in thorough keeping with the tenour of his mind, when tuned to its natural surroundings. In dealing with Celtic religion, mythology, and legend, it is not so much the varying local and temporal forms that demand our attention, as the all-pervading and animating spirit, which shows its essential character even through the scanty remains of the ancient Celtic world. Celtic religion bears the impress of nature on earth far more than nature in the heavens

Ascendant 4° Scorpio 20' - Midheaven 11° Leo 35'

Charlton Heston Star Menu: El Cid, films include The Greatest Show on Earth, "The Big Country” and “The Ten Commandments,” in which he portrayed Moses

Fiery Mars embraces intellectual themes in the air sign Aquarius, giving rise to persistence in new methods when tackling old problems. There may be flirtation with an experimental theory [often generated by an abstract, detachment from a familiar security blanket, or a need for reform]. Mars in this 'garment' will relish the tension that results from an obstruction, handicap, and rejection in the workplace. The house of Aquarius has a lot to do with taking up completion of 'past karma', the last phase of adapt initiation, and overdue closures.

Aquarius is the zodiacal sign most associated with what is novel when applied to the urge to reinvent oneself, changing one’s profession, philosophic or political affiliation, and/or the search for a classic ‘make over.’

The spontaneous quality of Aquarius allows Mars to open up, act out, and improvise. One of the most compelling examples of Mars in Aquarius caught on the silver screen appears in Ben Hur, during the great chariot race. Charlton Heston is actually thrown forward, over the top of the chariot, onto the reins of four racing horses and can manage to keep his wits about him. He immediately starts to climb back into the chariot, regains control of his team, and rides on to win the race… without missing a beat. Heston won an Oscar for his role as Ben Hur, a nobleman who lived in Jerusalem during the early days of Roman occupation.

Mars in Aquarius is far more flexible and ‘expansive’ than Mars in Capricorn [his exaltation] so this list contains many masters in theory and science, and in particular, theory applied to music.

Errol Flynn was born in the British Commonwealth seaport Hobart, Tasmania [Australia], on June 20, 1909. Flynn's Sun encouraged his love of adventure @ 27° Gemini 43'
supported by his imagination with Luna @ 18° Cancer 47', an Aries 25° Ascendant, and his powerful Aquarian Midheaven @ 1° [eye of the Eagle]
Destiny Path: 9

Errol Flynn was born with Mars 14° Pisces 44', in House XI, one of the departments of life also associated with the screenwriter, director, and producer. His Mars is trine [120 degrees] Neptune, trine Venus, and sextile [60 degrees] Uranus

Mars in Pisces is one of those placements that turns straw into gold or it summons your worst nightmare. Mars, in the sign of translation, interpretation, and poetic license, has the power to inspire, bring an audience to the edge of its seats, and transform people who have hit the bottom rung of the ladder. Many consider Mars in Pisces too heavy for public consumption, but he is active in many of the star charts of popular, successful film, theatre, and music stars. The character of Mars does not usually fare well, in the same robust way, in most other professions, in particular those that must rely on left [computer] brain skill.

Errol Flynn’s Mars in opposition to Jupiter 7° Virgo 55' in the fifth house of early education, amusement/pleasure, the heart’s desire, theatre, archeology, strategy, and competitive sports, effectively converted his renown athletic agility to the screen.

His ‘collective awareness’ transferred well through his many heroic screen characters, starting with Captain Blood, his first portrayal on the silver screen. Some critics hold that Flynn’s best performance was his first because Blood brought out the natural generosity of Mars in Pisces, and an unusual ability to externalize those Martian gifts of poetic breadth of imagination. In fact, the hero Captain Blood reached the same depths of misfortune that would later befall Errol Flynn himself.
His "pinnacle years" smashes include: "The Charge of the Light Brigade," "The Adventures of Robin Hood," "The Dawn Patrol," "The Sea Hawk," "They Died With Their Boots On," and "Gentleman Jim."

The role of Robin Hood is considered, by many, his best performance of all. It should be mentioned that Flynn's character was forced to fight a duel to the death with Basil Rathbone in Captain Blood, and again, later on in the 1937 remake of The Adventures of Robin Hood.

Evangeline Adams writes: "The sign is watery, receptive, sensitive, psychic, the very antithesis of the fiery, dominant, brutal, material planet. Very few people with this detrimental position, unless strongly aspected, reach any remarkable goal; even the greatest men are so hampered in their external expression that their greatness passes unremarked in a world that can only be conquered by battle-axes and sledge-hammers."

Some of the rare distinctions are due to strategic use of intellect, a sound ‘long term business/career plan’, and the ability to understand the projection of charisma. A-listers use their creative gifts in conjunction with the power of foresight in professional life.

Jim Corbett
TOB September 1, 1866 at 11:00 AM in San Francisco, CA
TOD February 18, 1933 in Bayside, Queens
Sun 8°Virgo 44', Moon 1° Gemini 29'
Ascendant 5° Leo 53', MC 24° Aries 47'

Jim Corbett authored his autobiography under the title The Roar of the Crowd, that was serialized by The Saturday Evening Post in six weekly installments during October/November of 1924. The following year, G.P. Putnam's Sons, published it in book form, marketing it as the "True Tale of the Rise and Fall of a Champion." In 1942, the story was made into a Hollywood motion picture titled, Gentleman Jim, starring Errol Flynn as Corbett.

He was best known as "Gentleman Jim", the man who defeated the great John L. Sullivan. He also coached boxing at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. Corbett stood at 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m), with a reach of 73 inches (190 cm). He has been called the "Father of Modern Boxing" because of his scientific approach and innovations in technique. Some think that he changed prizefighting from a brawl to an art form.

On May 21, 1891, Corbett fought Peter "Black Prince" Jackson, because the reigning John L. Sullivan wouldn't fight Jackson because he was black. Corbett and Jackson fought to a draw after 61 rounds. On September 7, 1892 at the Olympic Club in New Orleans, Louisiana, Corbett won the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship by knocking out John L. Sullivan in the 21st round. Corbett’s new scientific boxing technique enabled him to dodge Sullivan’s rushing attacks, and wear him down with jabs.

In Bob Dylan's 1975 song "Hurricane," Dylan contrasts Rubin Carter and Gentleman Jim saying that "he ain't no Gentleman Jim."

For his only title defense, January 25, 1894 Corbett knocked out Charley Mitchell of Great Britain in three rounds. On September 7 1894 he took part in the production of one of the first recorded boxing events, a fight with Peter Courtney. This was filmed at the Black Maria studio at West Orange, New Jersey, in the USA and was produced by William K.L. Dickson. It was only the second boxing match to be recorded.

General background: Mars in Pisces shows your life will be an eventual one and yet will bring periods of restriction and limitation. Incidents will occur causing you a deal of sorrow and, at times, placing you under the necessity of making sacrifices for others. As a result of these experiences you will gain considerably in knowledge and understanding so long as you do not give way to feelings of bitterness or resentment, and always do your best to maintain as broad a view of affairs and people as possible. Mars is the arena – Mars in Pisces is the story of Christians in the arena. Mars is conquest – Mars in Pisces is gain of and through spiritual soul powers. Mars is hardware – Mars in Pisces is the paint box feature that helps edit images.

You will be brought into touch with what may be termed the ‘seamy’ side of life but, by retaining your sense of proportion and by letting your normal power of resourcefulness aid you, you will be able to render a great deal of service and help to others who have not the same strength of character or purpose as yourself and, as a result of your efforts, will reap a greater degree of ultimate reward than may be anticipated, and which will bring much recompense for the sacrifices made.

Mars in Pisces will bring many difficulties, emotional upsets and disturbances into the life, and sometimes an element of tragedy, more particularly when Mars is in adverse aspect to Saturn or Uranus. Some liability towards enmity and imprisonment may be prominent but, at the same time, resourcefulness and ingenuity will give good opportunity for the surmounting of difficulties. Manufacturing, building and munitions are governed by Mars in the commercial world.

Gladiator

Deeper Levels - Russell Crowe, in Gladiator, explores a spiritual side to Maximus who, after the assassination of Marcus Aurelius, must fight to survive though his psyche is perpetually at death's door. The star chart defines this kind of challenge at the The Nadir, the deepest point in the whole chart. The fourth house that governs domestic matters, transmigration of souls, the grave, kiva, and deep level rebirthing experiences, is predominately on the mind of Maximus. In ancient times, this department of life probably governed the funerary gladiatorial games in Rome, before Augustus brought new guidelines to the gladiatorial school and transformed weapons and attire worn in the arena. Associated themes may include the famous line, We, who are about to die, salute you. In truth, we all reach this door when we enter a level 8 sleep state, but forget the experience when we wake. When we view the door in Gladiator we glimpse the possibility Maximus will reunite with his waiting family.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Henry Rider Haggard and Allan Quatermain

The character of Allan Quatermain has been portrayed in film and television by, in alphabetical order, Richard Chamberlain, Sean Connery, Stewart Granger, Cedric Hardwicke, Patrick Swayze, and others. All players mentioned here have the important T-square aspect – unusual, since the associated list of productions range from King Solomon's Mines (Cedric Hardwicke, 1937) through King Solomon's Mines (Patrick Swayze, 2004) and beyond.

According to zone troopers, Allan Quatermain was the premier attraction on the silver screen in 1919, presented on All Hallow’s Eve in private screening. Rider wrote in his journal, "It is not at all bad, but it might be a great deal better."
See for Allan Quatermain film and TV chronology

Henry Rider Haggard was born June 22, 1856, 5:10 AM in Bradenham, Norfolk (UK)
Sun: 0°54' Cancer      ASC: 19°22' Cancer
Moon: 18°34' Aquarius          MC: 17°57' Pisces
The only planet beneath the horizon is Mars @ Mars 11°20' Libra, in his Fourth House, suggesting Allan Quatermain may have been the externalization of his Mars, the desire to build, create, grow, and pioneer.

Note all the players have exact T-squares in their nativity star charts

Richard Chamberlain
Born on March 31, 1934, at 6:20 PM in Los Angeles CA
Sun: 10°40' Aries     ASC: 13°04' Libra
Moon: 23°38' Libra          MC: 14°18' Cancer
Mars 13°40' Aries, in the Seventh House
T-square dominates the chart in houses 1, 7, 10
Moon 23°38' Libra, in the First House or Ascendant – a desire for ease combined with a love of updating or reforming the quality of life. Fond of study, especially if addressing assimilation/dissolution capability within the possible intellectual measure and range of individual, cultural, and group productions. Love of sports but a frequent disregard of danger as Pluto brings a daredevil tendency into the mix. Saturn helps to ground some ‘housecleaning’ aspects linked to Pluto by turning intellectual thought to understanding varied subtle properties with regard to imponderables. The use of radar, the seventh sense, could be a result of this multi-layered composition of natural force and human personality. The Midheaven suggests strong interest in the karma of nations, especially his own.

Sean Connery
Born: August 25, 1930, 6:05 PM in Edinburgh, Scotland
Sun: 1°45' Virgo     ASC: 6°07' Capricorn
Moon: 23°53' Virgo          MC: 18°44' Scorpio
Mars 28°15' Gemini, in the Sixth House, very near 7th cusp, indicating business skill and initiative, leadership, courage, rebelliousness, and protectiveness, as well as the love of solving puzzles thought to have no solution.
T-square in cardinal signs Aries, Moonchild, and Libra
Sean Connery’s Sun is conjunct the ‘Royal Star’ Regulus, so regardless of his T-square in cardinal signs Aries, Moonchild, and Libra, his life would be recognized as special among his peers if not rising to the attention of the general public. The squares between Mercury and Mars, the Moon and Mars, and his Mars opposition to Saturn generate agitation and challenges, especially with the Venus square Jupiter and Uranus square Jupiter factors that operate in the Seventh House of the orator, diplomat, general, and by extension, the stage, public spokesmanship, strategy, foreign affairs, and communications, often at the level of the global collective.
All descriptions of Allan Quatermain as an adventurer and explorer, especially due to his anchor in South Africa, are encapsulated in Connery’s Seventh House. Quatermain’s hunting skill and trading know-how are emphasized by Mars in Gemini, in the Sixth House of commerce, adding authenticity to Quatermain’s undisputed mastery in marksmanship. Tend to agree with critics who wish Connery had taken the role of Quatermain a few years earlier in his movie career.
BACK Sean Connery

Stewart Granger
Born: May 6, 1913, 2:00 AM in , England
Sun: 14°56' Taurus     ASC: 22°48' Aquarius
Moon: 11°48' Taurus          MC: 14°37' Sagittarius
Mars 28°26' Pisces, in Ascendant
Granger has a T-square in cardinal signs Jupiter 17cap50 sq Mercury 20ari31 sq nep 23Moonchild 29 The Mercury square Jupiter factor will accentuate positive thinking and optimism but not always with accompanying depth of thought when analysis is not carried to its eventual conclusion, in theory at least. The clairvoyant gift described by Aquarius ascending tends to compensate for this or balance the extant developments that result from the pressure of a ticking clock and few facts at hand when a decision must be made.
Change of scenery is often a solution to a kind of mental restlessness that may crop in, but the environment does not necessarily have to be a physical one, as illustrated by the many locations Granger made his superb films – he was also free of the clock as an actor, since he could shoot in any time zone and place according to the demands of the script at hand. Quatermain seems to have an active mind that favors ‘the plan’, an always open door to updated information and new knowledge, even when he seems at rest in his physical surroundings.

Cedric Hardwicke
Born: February 19, 1893, 12:00 PM (time unknown) Lye, Worcestershire UK
Sun: 1°07' Pisces Moon: 7°24' Aries
Mars 5°25' Taurus
This is a solar chart with T-square in fixed signs composed of Mars 5Tau25 op Uranus 10Scorpio43 rx, sq Venus 12 Aqu59
There is an unknown time of birth in the star chart for Cedric Hardwicke, so we cannot pinpoint the specific department of life Mars and other planets in his fixed sign T-square will operate. However, the overall tension created by the distance between Mars in Taurus, Uranus in Scorpio, and Venus in Aquarius suggest artistic skill at top performance level throughout life, although not a constant factor in development of career or character. Reliance on the insight and decisions of others could create problems unless advisors and close friends are chosen carefully. Inspired, spontaneous, and sometimes brilliant, the gradual awakening to the value of a fully developed and researched plan of action brings success over the course of life. The resistance to the domination of others is strong and the ability to quit and close a private or business relationship is part of the Allan Quatermain legend.

Patrick Swayze
Born: August 18, 1952, 8:10 AM in Houston Heights, TX USA
Sun: 25°33' Leo     ASC: 24°45' Virgo
Moon: 3°22' Leo          MC: 24°28' Gemini
Mars 24°40' Scorpio, in the Third House
I Massive T-square in fixed signs Mars 24Scorpio40 opposite Jupiter 20Tau11 sq Leo stellium Mer 15Leo44 rx, Pluto 21Leo20, Sun 25Leo33
Patrick Swayze has massive squares between his Mars in Scorpio in his Third House of Life and his Leo stellium, a foundation for archaeology, adventure, and psychological comprehension. These planets construct a T-square in fixed signs with the addition of Jupiter in Taurus. Common sense and compromise are two important life lessons that, when learned early, help mitigate consequences that result from necessary interaction with unpleasant, sometimes cruel, people (see Ghost, Next of Kin, Red Dawn, Road House). There is an erosive or destructive factor with Mars square Pluto that can bring in the principle of disintegration. The awakening of the level of consciousness that can tune in to intolerance and expression of coercive manipulations of others is best portrayed by Swayze in City of Joy, in my opinion. But this quality of perception is also associated with Allen Quatermain, as the acquired name, Macumazahn, meaning "Watcher-by-Night," in reference to his nocturnal habits and keen instincts, would imply - as indicated by Mars in Scorpio.

Ron Howard [Mars in Sagittarius] directed Cinderella Man, the story of James J. Braddock, his life during the Depression years in America and his fantastic come back.

I wanted to know about the label they always give this sport [boxing] – "This sweet science." You start talking to boxers and they begin relaying things in terms of patterns, openings, flashes of opportunity. I wanted to understand what’s going on in a fighters mind, how he was winning and losing fights as we went along, so I put in flash backs…

Braddock did say that he thought he saw Corn Griffin opening up – well, I took that clue and decided to work with it.

Ron Howard interview Sports Illustrated

...What made the story of Jim Braddock so compelling to you?
Howard: Because I didn't feel Braddock was being driven by ego. It was all about survival during a period that has always fascinated me - the Depression. I decided it was this family survival story. The struggle to keep warm and feed the kids was as brutal as what we were depicting in the ring.

Cinderella Man is your first film in which sports plays a central role. What challenges did you encounter?
Howard: Boxing has been utilized so effectively in so many films that I couldn’t count on that being enough to excite an audience. I approached it a little more like combat than a sport. I kept saying it’s like this guy gets dropped behind enemy lines and has to fight his way home each time.

James J. Braddock was born on June 7, 1905, in New York City, New York
His Sun 16 Gemini, conjunct radix Pluto 21 Gemini, is the symbol for the resurrection of the Phoenix. The fiery, mystical bird of Egypt, reborn from its own ashes, is portrayed wonderfully in the Ron Howard movie themes of Cinderella Man. Russell Crowe as Jim Braddock, always able to return to the ring, is great casting.

Part of the sub-text and reading between the lines of Braddock’s athletic performance, concerns Saturn 27 Pisces 52’, conjunct the fixed star of good fortune, Formalhaut. This position bestows a ‘buffer’ effect so that, even during the Braddock-Louis fight, when Braddock’s peaking Saturn Return resided @ 2 Pisces 22’rx [conjunct the star in the same degree], the extraordinary financial advantage negotiated by his manager [Saturn] helped to sustain Braddock during his retirement years.

Note that on the night of the Joe Louis fight, Jim Braddock endured an exact Saturn return, a 'triple critical day' in biorhythm science.
Although Jim never complained, few knew that during the Louis fight, Braddock actually received medication for arthritis. He barely lifted his left during the fight because the medicine numbed him like a muscle relaxant.

Sagittarius has always been a sign associated with shooting for far off goals. An arrow is shot at the bull's eye with a bow. The constellation of Sagittarius, the Archer, or Centaur, is the zodiacal sign that rules professional sports, and in particular, archery.

The Greeks called this constellation Toxeutes, the Archer, from Toxon, bow. Modern archers are known as toxophilites or 'bow lovers', toxophily is the sport of archery. The word Taxus, the yew genus and the Latin word for yew, is of the same origin as Greek toxon, bow. In Europe bows were mostly made from yew, and English bows in particular were invariably cut from yew trees. Greek toxicon, neuter of the adjective toxicos, means 'arrow poison' and poisons smeared on arrows were fired from bows (toxa or toxon) derived from the yew-tree. Our verb intoxicate originally meant 'to poison'.

Jack LaMotta

Sun: 8° Virgo 23' - Moon: 20° Taurus 02'
Ascendant: 26° Capricorn 54' - Midheaven: 21° Scorpio 25'
Destiny Path 7

Giacobbe La Motta [born July 10, 1921], better known as Jake LaMotta, nicknamed "The Bronx Bull" and "The Raging Bull", is a former boxer who was world middleweight champion and whose life has been as controversial outside the ring as it was inside it. He was portrayed by Robert De Niro in the biopic Raging Bull. Height: 5' 8" (1.73 m) Boxing records LaMotta, who compiled a record of 83 wins, 19 losses and 4 draws with 30 wins by way of knockout, was the first man to beat Sugar Ray Robinson.

The necessities of boxing, rather than the historical figure of Jake La Motta, define the character in Raging Bull. This explanation of course is not sufficient, but before disproving it as idle, one has to remember that formal ingenuity, in spite of a romantic myth, is no enemy to sincerity and seriousness. Many times in his interviews Scorsese has stated that his films derive from established patterns and that he has always been surprised, in the end, by the way traditional forms could reflect his most vital interests.

Verisimilitude has been so extended these days that we tend to accept in a fictitious context the most unlikely people: people whom we would not care to consider as real if we had any choice. Seen as people from yesterday’s paper, Alice is foolish, Johnny Boy is whimsical, Jimmy Doyle is insane, La Motta is crazy, and Travis Bickle is mad. But from what we know of them as fictitious characters in a movie, not only do we comprehend them but we sympathize with them as well.

Jess Stern wrote, “Like so many of my generation, I was fascinated by the meteoric career of an Alabama farm boy who had become a glorious legend in his time, and was now having trouble adjusting to inglorious middle age.

Joe Louis had active first and fifth houses, and this was particularly good for a boxer. “The first house,” astrologer Doris Chase Doane explained, “represents, the physical body, and the fifth amusement and also betting and public contests, and the house of hazards and speculation. These two houses provide the astrological environment a boxer needs. He could have all the planetary constants for fighting, but without activity in those two houses he couldn’t make it.”

In Louis’ chart, all of the required constants were prominent. Mars has five aspects, Jupiter six, Neptune six and Mercury six. An active house doesn’t have to have a planet in it; the planet ruling the sign on the cusp can be very active and that links that house’s department of life with the life pattern. In Joe Louis’ chart, he had the first [10 Cancer 10’] and fifth [29 Libra 39’ cusp] active, without one planet in his fifth house. However, Libra is on the cusp, so Venus, its ruler, is associated, and Scorpio is intercepted, so both Pluto and Mars are associated with this house. All three planets are active by aspect, and aspect shows strength.

Joe Louis is a Taurus [21 27’]. He was born May 13, 1914, in Lafayette, Alabama, at 8:00 A.M. Central Standard Time. He had Cancer rising and his Moon in Capricorn [11 53’], practically opposed to that Cancer reflecting deep feelings that could be easily stirred.”

-Jess Stern, A TIME FOR ASTROLOGY

Note: In 1942, Joe Louis was posted at Fort Riley in Kansas when Jackie Robinson was inducted into the United States Army. They served together and it has been suggested that the influence Joe Louis had at that time helped crack the door open for Jackie Robinson, who would later play professional ball with the Dodgers.

* Robert Graves writes about the Greek ten-year-long campaign to destroy Troy in his book, The Siege and Fall of Troy. First, he describes in detail Troy’s inception.

The Foundation of Troy
Troy, they say, was founded by Prince Scamander who, because of famine, sailed eastward from the island of Crete with a large number of followers, resolved to plant a colony in some fertile spot. An oracle had ordered him to settle wherever earthborn enemies should disarm his men under cover of darkness. He landed on the coast of Phrygia, within sight of a tall mountain overgrown by pines, which he named Ida in honour of Cretan Mount Ida, and camped beside a river to which he gave his own name, Scamander. On waking next morning, the Cretans saw that a swarm of hungry mice had nibbled their bow-strings, the leather straps of their shields, and all edible parts of their armour. Since these must clearly be the earth-born enemies of the Oracle, Scamander called a halt, made friends with the Phrygian natives, and began farming the soil. Not long afterwards a colony of Locrian Greeks landed close by and put themselves under his leadership.
Though the Phrygians let him build a city near the River Scamander, he could not at first decide on the best position. Then someone proposed sending a dappled cow into the plain, and watching where she lay down to chew her cud. The cow chose a small hill, and around it Scamander’s men marked out the boundaries of Troy. They built houses inside, but did not raise the walls for some years, being too busy improving their farms.
At last, a Trojan king named Laomedon won all the help he needed from two important gods—Poseidon and Apollo. They had rebelled against Almighty Zeus, the leading god of Olympus, who sentenced them to be Laemedon’s slaves for a whole year. At the King’s orders, Poseidon built most of the walls, while Apollo played a harp and looked after the royal flocks and herds. Aeacus, a Locrian colonist, built the wall facing seaward. It was, of course, not nearly so strong as those built by the gods.
