Out of Sight

Paging Guy Fawkes, Paging Guy Fawkes... he's not answering his page...

1973 Horror Classic, The Wicker Man
shot in Kirkcudbrightshire

In the first edition of his autobiography, Tall, Dark and Gruesome [1977] Christopher Lee writes, "The best scripted film I ever took part in, The Wicker Man, turned out in the end to be a flawed masterpiece. It was a terrifying story of the Lord of Misrule, a conflict between Christianity and Paganism, worked out on a Scottish island. I played the head of the pagan community, Lord Summerisle, and the virginal policeman, played by Edward Woodward, is burned alive in the Wicker Man as a sacrifice to the Druids. I acted as a go-between in finding producer Peter Snell after Anthony Shaffer, before he's got Sleuth on, came to me with a novel by David Pinner, called Ritual, asking if I thought a script would find a sponsor. The music, specially composed for it by the American Paul Giovanni, was tremendous. It was a perfect example of fantasy, and might yet become a cult picture... had no press showing nor promotion... those who did see it were given a version that was too drastically cut. Another twenty-five minutes should have survived... I'm not sure why, but it does seem to be true that one cannot have everything. The one great regret of my life is that I did not make more of my singing..."
